The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Visitor Visa (also called a Temporary Resident Visa) is an official document placed in your passport that shows you meet the requirements to travel to Canada. Most travellers need a Visitor Visa to enter Canada, including if you’re transiting through.
Generally, visitors are allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months, unless the border services officer at the point of entry specifies a different date. You can apply online through the IRCC Portal or via paper only in special situations (for example due to disability).
Applicants aged 14 to 79 generally must provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) when applying; these remain valid for ten years.
The application fee for a Visitor Visa starts at CAD $100. Processing times vary by country and depending on how complete your application is, and giving biometrics may delay the process. Be sure to gather all required documents (passport/travel document, proof of funds, travel history, itinerary, letter of invitation if applicable) to support your application. Even if all documents are submitted, there is no guarantee of approval — the visa officer has discretion.
Make sure you check the official Canada‑government site to see if you need a Visitor Visa (or perhaps only an eTA) before you apply.
