The Canada Study Permit allows eligible international students to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. You generally must apply before arriving in Canada, though in some limited cases you may apply from inside Canada.
To qualify, you must have a letter of acceptance from a DLI, a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL), proof of financial support for tuition, living expenses and return travel, and meet health and admissibility requirements.
For study programs lasting six months or less, a study permit may not be required — but you must verify your individual situation. Required documentation typically includes a valid passport or travel document, biometrics (if applicable). Once approved, your study permit is usually valid for the duration of your program plus 90 days for wrap-up or extension arrangements.
While studying in Canada you must follow all conditions on your permit, remain enrolled full-time at a DLI, and notify the government of changes (such as school, contact info) if required. After completing your program, you may be eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) if your program and institution meet the required conditions — check eligibility in advance. The current application fee for a study permit (including extensions) is CAD 150. Fraud prevention is important: only authorized representatives may assist with applications, and knowingly supplying false information can lead to refusal and bans from Canada.
